Early Life and Education

Hakainde Hichilema was born on 4 June 1962 in a village in Monze District in present-day Southern Province, Zambia. He grew up in humble circumstances, the son of a cattle herder. Through hard work and determination, he earned a government scholarship to study at the University of Zambia, graduating in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Business Administration.

He later pursued further academic studies in the United Kingdom, obtaining a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Finance and Business Strategy from the University of Birmingham. His academic formation shaped his lifelong commitment to economic transformation and evidence-based governance.

Business Career

Following his education, Hichilema rose quickly through the ranks of Zambia's corporate world. He served as Chief Executive Officer of Coopers and Lybrand Zambia from 1994 to 1998, and subsequently as CEO of Grant Thornton Zambia from 1998 to 2006, both leading professional services firms. He was the largest local shareholder in Barclays Bank Zambia Plc and sat on numerous boards, including Sun International and Africa Trade Insurance (ATI).

A self-made entrepreneur and commercial farmer, Hichilema is one of Zambia's largest cattle ranchers, operating four ranches and supplying beef to both local and regional markets. He also holds substantial investments in the tourism sector. He refers to himself as "a simple village boy" who built his success through education, hard work and integrity — values he brought to the presidency.

Political Career

Hichilema became UPND party president in 2006 following the death of the party's founder, Anderson Mazoka, who had been his business mentor and close friend. He contested the presidential election six times — in 2006, 2008, 2011, 2015, 2016 and finally 2021 — consistently building his vote share across elections and across all regions of Zambia.

In the January 2015 presidential election, he came within 27,757 votes — just 1.66 percent — of defeating incumbent Edgar Lungu. He narrowly lost again in 2016. His persistence through repeated defeats became a symbol of his resilience and unwavering commitment to democratic change.

Imprisonment and International Support

On 11 April 2017, Hichilema was arrested and charged with treason after his motorcade allegedly failed to give way to President Lungu's convoy — a charge widely condemned as politically motivated. He was held in solitary confinement for several days under harsh conditions. His arrest drew condemnation from the United States, the European Union, the European Parliament, the Commonwealth, and human rights organisations worldwide.

He was released on 16 August 2017 after four months in detention, following a nolle prosequi entered by the state. His release was celebrated across Zambia, and he was subsequently awarded the Africa Freedom Award in Johannesburg by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in October 2017. The experience steeled his resolve and deepened his support among Zambians who saw him as a man who had suffered for democracy.

Election Victory and the New Dawn

On 12 August 2021, Hichilema won the presidential election with 59.02 percent of the vote, defeating incumbent Edgar Lungu by nearly one million votes — a landslide. It was the highest voter turnout in Zambia's history, driven particularly by young voters who rallied behind the campaign slogan "Bally will fix it." The election was widely praised as free and fair.

He was inaugurated as the 7th President of the Republic of Zambia on 24 August 2021 at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka, in a ceremony attended by several heads of state from across Africa. His election marked the third peaceful democratic transfer of power since Zambia's return to multi-party democracy in 1991.

The Presidency

Since taking office, President Hichilema has prioritised economic recovery, debt restructuring, and investment-led growth. His administration secured a $1.4 billion IMF programme in December 2021 and went on to achieve a historic restructuring of Zambia's $6.3 billion external debt in 2023. Zambia's economy has grown at an average of 5.2 percent annually between 2021 and 2024.

In education, his government introduced a free education policy in 2022, enabling over 2.3 million learners to return to school. In health, 282 new health facilities have been constructed and 18,000 health workers recruited. In agriculture, Zambia recorded a historic maize harvest of 3.7 million metric tonnes in 2025.

On the international stage, he has positioned Zambia as a credible partner for investment and diplomacy, visiting over 40 countries and earning a reputation as one of Africa's most active economic diplomats. He describes himself as Zambia's "chief marketing officer."

Personal Life

President Hichilema has been married to Mutinta Hichilema since 1988. They have three children together. He is a devout Christian and a baptised member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He and his wife were invested as Master Guides in December 2020. He is also a philanthropist, having contributed to the construction of clinics, schools, boreholes and community facilities across Zambia throughout his life.

He is known for his warmth, directness and accessibility. Despite the weight of the presidency, he continues to speak in plain language about Zambia's challenges and opportunities, maintaining a deep connection with ordinary citizens across the country.
